Let me introduce you to this alternate world: It was 1900, the turn of the century, when a new drug was invented by an aspiring French scientist. Labeled Miraclenium, it was truly a miracle drug. It made people live longer, healthier lives, solved skin conditions, improved the immune system with very few side effects, save making it a little more difficult to wake up in the morning (in practice that simply meant most people were getting better sleep anyway). Most notable of its gifts, it hugely suppressed appetite and the effect of calories on the body. Pudgy women and weighty men virtually disappeared off the face of the planet overnight by the time that the drug had been rolled out to the Western World in 1904. From there it spread even further, and every newly industrializing society would salivate at the opportunity to get shipments of Miraclenium for a happier, healthier, citizenry. Best of all, it was cheap and easy to produce. Human history marched on, however. Wars, famines, and everything in between continued to occur. By the end of the Second World War, most of the new generations had been born on the drug, and its effects largely faded into the background. Overall, there was less depression, less malaise and, of course, much less weight in society. Any woman over 140 pounds, and any man over 190 would come as a shock to most people, especially considering most people’s appetites were much smaller and few craved more food than they needed. It wasn’t long before just about every human on earth had been born with the drug in their system, and thus into a lifetime of being thin. But by the 1970’s, a mass psychological phenomenon was approaching. By this point, the vast majority of living people had been born in Miraclenium’s world. Every person they had ever seen had been slim, trim and fit and at a certain point a simple desire to see something different in terms of human beauty grew, and grew, and grew. The world desired weight. And yet, it could not give up Miraclenium, partially because the substance was now in most from birth and passed down genetically. But it took a will of iron and a stomach deeper than an oceanic trench to be able to sustain enough food to have anything even close to physical growth. Yet still, people pushed forward, especially with the invention of a new sport, competitive eating. Once nothing more than an interactive carnival novelty, competitive eating, from a few small local leagues, grew to become a national phenomena. Every cheerleader and sorority girl was guaranteed to have a spot on the school’s competitive eating team, and just as many girls aspired to as much. In addition to the expressiveness of the quantities of food, there was an undeniable voyeuristic aspect. When every pound took more than ten times the amount of food it would without Miraclenium, then every pound was a victory worth showing off, and showing off the girls would. Mostly male audiences would go wild at every bulge and roll and soon the sport was gaining momentum, until an aspiring businessman, Vincent McCain decided to concentrate the disparate leagues into a single, unified business, the American Women’s Competitive Eating League. America was not the only nation that hungered for the new sport though, and it quickly spread to the rest of North America. Then, to Asia and Europe, from there to Africa and South America, and soon Women’s competitive eating was rivaling Men’s soccer for the most successful and widespread sport in the entire world. It was 1992 when Vincent McCain announced the creation of the World Women’s Competitive Eating League, or the WWCEL, often shortened to WCEL. From there, infrastructure would be built, competitions planned, professionals hired, and after an arduous 5 years, come 1997 it’s time for the first ever WCEL world-wide tournament in history. The world, but particularly a generation of eager young men ogle their screens enthusiastically and immerse themselves in the stories of the lucky superstars who will kick off the cultural event. The rules are simple: 39 girls from around the world will compete in 9 rounds of competition over the course of 4 months for a shot at becoming the International Women’s Eating Champion! Throughout our story, we’ll follow the tale of one Alice Friedman, a thin (for now!) half-Asian, half-Jewish girl from Portland Oregon on her quest to become the Champion! Hey, I'm a new writer here and I've decided to post a story (the idea of which I've had for quite a while). I hope you can forgive the incredible absurdity of this premise! I promise that it will later get more grounded, I just needed to find a way to create a world where being fat is aspirational, but in which everyone is not already morbidly obese. The whole drug thing is simply a starting off point, used to make weight gain something which the characters desperately want but does not come easy. I can assure you with great confidence that the story will be more like your classic sports tale than anything resembling science fiction or alternate history! Jelena Dokic was, at one time, the world #4 player on the WTA tour. A Major Player at Grand Slams, she was Wimbledon Semi finalist in 2000. She also got attention for being a bit of a hottie and being rather busty for a tennis player. But as her career went on, she developed something of a visible 'weight problem'. She started to be plagued by injuries and a very difficult life off-court and with the Press. She retired in 2014, and dropped out of sight. But now she's back, with a new Autobiography which contains the revelation that in the two years after retirement, the 5 foot 9 inch, 60kg hottie ballooned to 120kg. Her weight doubled.
